Five men were arrested on Friday afternoon shortly after one of them allegedly stole eight packs of cheese from a supermarket at La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara, police said.
Investigators said they were treating the offence, which allegedly occurred at about 1:25 p.m., as one of simple larceny.
“Initial enquiries revealed that two males entered the supermarket and one of them allegedly removed eight packs of cheese valued at GY$8,640 and concealed them on his person. The act was reportedly observed on the establishment’s CCTV system,” the Guyana Police Force said in a statement.
Police said the suspects, along with other occupants of a motor car, subsequently attempted to leave the scene.
Police said they responded to the report and intercepted the vehicle at Triumph Public Road, East Coast Demerara.
Police did not release the names of those arrested but said they are the car driver, a 48-year-old construction worker of Campbellville, Georgetown, a 35-year-old construction worker of Stevedore Housing Scheme, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, a 28-year-old of Section ‘C’, Sophia, East Coast Demerara, a 35-year-old gold miner of Princess Street, Lodge, Georgetown and a 19-year-old stevedore of South Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
A cutlass was recovered from the vehicle, which has since been lodged, police added.
