After a high-speed chase and the collision of several Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) vehicles, the anti-drug agency on Sunday said it seized a box containing more than 18 pounds of cocaine after it was hurled out of a getaway car.
Those arrested are Shaquille Gordon who was driving the Volkswagen car, PAL 4117, and Ravindranauth Persaud, the driver of a minibus bearing licence number BAB 6337.
CANU declined to say how the minibus driver was involved.
CANU said when they attempted to intercept the car, the driver fled the scene at high speed, prompting anti-drug agents to chase that vehicle. “During the chase, the driver attempted to evade the officers, resulting in a collision involving several CANU vehicles,” the home affairs ministry’s unit said.
The unit said the motor vehicle was subsequently intercepted at the intersection of Rupert Craig Highway and Sheriff Street. Mr Gordon was the lone occupant at the time.
CANU said as its officers were pursuing the car along Sherriff Street before the intersection with Rupert Craig Highway, they observed a brown cardboard box being thrown from the said motorcar. “Several officers stopped to retrieve the box, while others continued the pursuit, and they later showed the car driver and the bus driver the box.
The brown cardboard box recovered during the pursuit was shown to the suspects at the scene. A search of the box was conducted in their presence, during which seven brick-like parcels, suspected of being cocaine, were discovered,” CANU added.
Gord and Persaud were arrested and escorted to CANU Headquarters where the brick-like objects were tested positive for cocaine and weighed approximately 8.226 kilogrammes (18.135 pounds).
