Guyanese authorities are investigating whether 77 Cubans located at a house in Georgetown are victims of Trafficking in Persons (TIP) after they alleged that their passports have been held until they pay monies due, the Guyana Police Force said.
“Several individuals reported that they travelled to Guyana under credit arrangements and that their travel documents were being retained pending payment. These claims are forming part of the ongoing investigation,” police said in a statement.
Investigators said the men and women were screened for allegedly being TIP victims.
The joint operation was conducted early on Sunday morning at 12:03 at a building located on Charlotte and Albert streets, Georgetown. The exercise was carried out by police from the TIP unit, Criminal Investigation Department and personnel from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security (C-TIP Unit).
Police said the Cubans were handed over to the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security for further assessment and assistance.
Investigators said the premises were searched but nothing illegal was found. No one was arrested.
