The Guyana government is buying 8,000 speed governors (limiters) this year to slow down trucks on the country’s roadways, Minister of Finance Dr Ashni Singh said on Monday.
“We will be installing this year, 8,000 auto control speed regulators, known as governors, on trucks to limit the speed and, therefore, improve safety on our roads,” he told the National Assembly in his 2026 national budget speech.
Dr Singh also said the government would be building designated parking areas for trucks to ensure they stay off lanes. “We will confront the long standing challenge of heavy duty trucks parked along public roadway, posing safety risks, exacerbating congestion, and we will develop dedicated parking facilities for such large vehicles, and initial facilities planned in roads to accommodate over 390 trucks,” he said.
The finance minister also said the government would be rolling out a fully automated speed ticketing system as part of a broader safe road intelligence system that uses advanced cameras and radar speed guns to allow for real-time offence detection and automated issuance of tickets.
