A sister of the leader of We Invest In Nationhood (WIN) is facing several traffic-related offences after she was stopped by police at Eccles Public Road, East Bank Demerara, police said.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) did not name the accused, but Hana Mohamed confirmed on Thursday that she was stopped while driving a Toyota Land Cruiser bearing licence plate number, PAB 3000.
“The female driver will be notified by notice and summoned for failure to comply with directions of police in uniform, failure to produce drivers license and other documents,” the police force said in a statement.
Police alleged that while they were waiting for the woman to produce her driver’s licence and documents for the vehicle she was driving, WIN Leader and member of parliament, Azruddin Mohamed, approached the vehicle that his sister was driving and told her to drive home and not to the police station.
The law enforcement agency said the woman drove the vehicle to 789 Republic Park, East Bank Demerara, and when they arrived and attempted to clamp the vehicle, a man identified himself as Maksim Dmitriyev of Lot 275 Barrow Street, Eccles, produced the documents indicating that he is the registered owner of the vehicle that the woman was driving.
Police said Mr Dmitriyev was told of the offences committed by him, to which he was invited to the Providence Police Station.
At the station the driver was processed for prohibition of tinted glass among other unspecified traffic offences. The owner was then placed on his own recognisance to report on Monday, 29 December, at 9 a.m. police said.
The GPF did not disclose the outcome of the verification of the engine and chassis by the Guyana Revenue Authority’s Licence and Certifying Officer.
Ms Mohamed on Friday morning said “the police stated all documents fully up-to-date and compliant. No traffic violations or laws were broken.”
For her part, Ms Mohamed said a police inspector allowed her to take her children home but moments later other police officers arrived on the scene with a wheel clamp.
She blamed President Irfaan Ali for using the police to “run down” the opposition on Christmas Day.
“This is political harassment and political persecution. Most of the policemen were extremely sympathetic shaking their heads and embarrassed to do this. This is coming from the very top. For those who know Irfaan personally, this is from the playbook of the president,” she said.
