Surinamese police have arrested a man in the western area of that country after he was allegedly found in possession of a quantity of agro-chemicals, the law enforcement agency there said.
The man was arrested on Monday at an address on Ramawat Soechitweg after police said they received information.
According to that information, “illegal chemicals were supposedly stored in the storage area,” the Suriname Police Corps said in a statement.
Upon arrival, law enforcement agents said they found ten boxes of chemicals, specifically herbicides, in the tray of a truck.
The Surinamese Police Corps said the owner, a 63-year-old man whose initials are J.P and who was also at the location, admitted that he had smuggled the chemicals into the country from Guyana via the so-called “back track” route, with the aim of selling them in his agro-shop.
Both the chemicals and the truck were seized and the suspect, J.P., was arrested and taken to the police station for appearance.
After consultation with the Public Prosecution Service, police said he was remanded to custody by the police pending the investigation.
Recently, Surinamese police arrested a man in Nickerie after he was in possession of a large quantity of fuel that was allegedly smuggled from Guyana to be sold at a filling station.
