The United Kingdom’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla would be visiting Guyana in October as part of a visit to a number of Caribbean countries, authorities said Wednesday.
The Guyana government said King Charles has accepted its invitation and the request of the United Kingdom government to visit Guyana in the latter part of October to mark 60 years of bilateral relations between the UK and Guyana.
The visit will coincide with their their Majesties’ autumn tour announced by Buckingham Palace earlier Wednesday.
During their tour from Tuesday, 27 October to Wednesday, 4 November 2026., the Royal Family says the King and Queen will attend the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, scheduled for November 1 to 4.
The King is the Head of the Commonwealth, a grouping of former British colonies around the world.
The tour will begin in The Bahamas before travelling to Guyana.
The last British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by her husband Prince Phillip, visited Guyana in 1994.
Following Wednesday’s announcement of King Charles III’s October visit, the Royal Family boasted about the work of The King’s Foundation, His Majesty’s nature and sustainability charity, in Guyana.
The Royal Family’s Facebook post says a team of architects and urban planners from The King’s Foundation Projects Team have been working with the Government of Guyana to support the country’s sustainable development.
“Their work includes creating plans for the regeneration and growth of the capital city, Georgetown, and promoting healthy streets and outdoor spaces in the growing city – all helping to further The Commonwealth Declaration on Sustainable Urbanism.”
The BBC quoted the palace as saying on Wednesday that the tour will “celebrate the communities, cultures and nature within the Commonwealth family.”
It marks the first time the King has visited the Caribbean since 2021, when he travelled to Barbados to see the country officially removed Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state and become the world’s newest republic.
The monarch, who was the Prince of Wales at the time, acknowledged the “appalling atrocity of slavery” the Caribbean island suffered during a speech he made.
He also visited Antigua and Barbuda in 2017 following the widespread devastation caused by hurricanes Irma and Maria, and made official visits to Guyana in 2000 and the Bahamas in 1973.
He travelled across the Atlantic Ocean earlier this year when he visited Bermuda in May, where he is also head of state.
The trip marked his first royal visit as monarch to a British overseas territory and came after a state visit to the US.
