Long-serving People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) member Mervyn Williams on Sunday resigned live from that party’s weekly interview programme with A Partnership for National Unity’s (APNU) lead parliamentary representative Dr Terrence Campbell.
He said he resigned from the PNCR’s Central Executive with a “heavy heart” less than two years after having won the second highest number of votes out of 15 persons in internal party elections.
He also said he was quitting the party.
“It is even with a heavier heart that I say to you, ladies and gentlemen – and my guest Dr Campbell forgive me for not saying this before but I now announce, regrettably, my resignation from the People’s National Congress Reform,” he said.
The programme, Nation Watch, which he hosted for several years, was subsequently removed from the PNCR and APNU’s Facebook pages and other social media sites.
No reasons were given for his decisions, but he said it was a “difficult” one. “The circumstances dictate that I take this decision. It was one that I contemplated even before September 1. It was one that I contemplated in the run-up to September 1, but my duty, commitment and loyalty to my party did not allow me to do that and I held my hand and there were unfortunate occurrences after September 1. In fact, one of those two occurrences predates September 1 but came to my attention after,” he said.
Mr Williams said due to those circumstances and, recognising the need for the PNCR to undergo its rebuilding process, he opted to depart.
Neither of the two interlocking political organisations issued a statement about Mr Williams’ departure after more than 40 years with the PNCR. During that period her served twice as a member of parliament and Region Three (West Demerara-Essequibo Islands) councillor.
Mr Williams, the second Indigenous Amerindian Guyanese to be elected to the PNCR’s Central Executive party after Dr George Norton, is also a former shadow agriculture minister.
He was also a senior party functionary at various levels.
