Wife, husband in murder-suicide

Last Updated on Tuesday, 16 September 2025, 21:46 by Writer

A man on Sunday chopped to death his wife at Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice and then committed suicide by drinking Gramoxone, police said.

The woman has been identified as domestic worker/vendor 36-year-old Alisha ‘Tito’ Narine of Plot Z, Grant 1780, Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice. Her husband’s name has been given by police as Ram Singh.

Police said the incident occurred between 9:30 am and 10:00 am at Vishal Singh Sawmill Compound, Crabwood Creek.

Investigators said the parents of two were partners for the past 15 years during which they had domestic problems. They had also appeared before the court.

United States-based Guyanese, 34-year-old Taramattie “Vanessa” Joseph said that at about 9:30 am her cousin ‘Tito’ video-called her via WhatsApp while seated under a coconut tree in the sawmill compound. During the call, Joseph told police that he observed Ram Singh approach from behind, holding a cutlass in his hand. He reportedly took the phone away and told Vanessa, “Today, today I will murder her.” He then ended the call. Vanessa immediately contacted her daughter and reported the incident.

Felisha Narine, the 18-year-old daughter of the victim, told police that she received a call from her neighbour, who informed her that Ram Singh was assaulting her mother. “She then took a taxi to the Vishal Singh Sawmill Compound, where she observed her mother’s body lying motionless with apparent chop wounds to the left foot and right hand. She subsequently proceeded to Springlands Police Station and reported the matter,” the Guyana Police Force said.

Police said that on arrival, they observed that the body of the deceased was lying in the compound, behind a heap of stones. The right foot, just below the knee, was almost severed, with additional injuries to the right shoulder and left hand, police also saod.

Investigators said Ram Singh was found about 360 feet away in a sideline trench, under a tree. He was suspected of having consumed a poisonous substance. He was informed of the allegation, arrested, cautioned, and escorted to the No. 75 Village Regional Hospital, Corentyne, Berbice, where he died.
