No new deadline for overdue census report, as Stats Bureau continues its work- Finance Minister

Last Updated on Tuesday, 20 May 2025, 20:19 by Writer

Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh has said that the Bureau of Statistics was still working feverishly to complete the report on the National Population and Housing Census 2022, but he declined to say what was the new deadline for the report’s completion.

He said he has informed the Bureau that government would like to see the census report concluded as soon as possible.”

Dr Singh said the census is important for policy-making and public investment decisions.

“I have conveyed this very clearly to the Bureau of Statistics and impressed on them the importance that we attach to the preliminary report being completed as soon as possible,” he told Demerara Waves Online News.

The Finance Minister said the Bureau did not provide a new deadline by which the task would be completed.

Dr Singh had on several occasions announced different timelines by which the report was expected to have been released.

The privately-owned independent Stabroek News newspaper had earlier this year quoted a Bureau of Statistics source as saying that Guyana’s population was now about 812,000.

The 2012 census had said the population was 746,955.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) also says that Guyana’s population is about 800,000.

Foreign Secretary Robert Persaud recently said there are “close to 100,000 persons of direct or indirect Venezuelan ancestry currently in Guyana.”
