Corrosion appeared to have led to an oil spill from a Palau-registered vessel while it was in Guyana to uplift a consignment of rice, according to well-placed sources.
Investigators said about 200 liters (44 gallons) of Total Visga hydraulic oil was released from the MV AROYAT, bearing International Maritime Organisation (IMO) number 9151395, while it was moored at the Demerara Sugar Terminal, Ruimveldt for loading of the grain.
Sources said some of the oil was recovered but most ran into the Demerara River on May 15, 2025.
The sources said they saw severe corrosion on many areas of the piping and steel.
The oil leaked from a hydraulic pipe that leads to a hydraulic motor for one of the vessel’s winches.
A plug was also not seen.
The Turkiye-based Kiva Marine Limited is responsible for the MV AROYAT, which is registered in the western Pacific Island of Palau.
