President Irfaan Ali on Friday warned that government would not tolerate the damage and destruction of public and private property by politically instigated persons looking to take advantage of the tension surrounding the death of 11-year-old Adriana Younge at a hotel in Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo.
“There is no way blocking public roads, burning public infrastructure, and inconveniencing citizens will help little Adriana’s cause or those interested in the truth.
These actions are now politically instigated and will not be accepted,” Dr Ali said on his Facebook page.
His call came in the aftermath of the burning down of two privately-owned houses at Tuschen by persons who were enraged at the death of Adriana Younge on Wednesday or Thursday.
The Double Day Hotel, in whose pool the girl’s body was seen, was also gutted by fire, despite the police force’s conflicting account of the whereabouts of the girl.
Looters also carted off beverages, mattresses, a generator, furniture and other valuables as the fire swept through the high-rise building.
Protesters on Friday converged in front of the Leonora Police Station, which is the Region Three (West Demerara-Essequibo Islands) Divisional headquarters, demanding that Divisional Commander Khalid Mandall be removed.
The protesters, a number of whom are supporters of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), blocked the Leonora Public Road, chanting slogans and waving placards.
As they chanted “No justice, no peace” and stood in solidarity with family members, relatives, friends and sympathisers of Miss Younge, they held placards that read “Human blood sacrifice must stop now, Guyana is bleeding,” “No confidence in the GPF,” “We need justice for our princess Adriana”,” Justice for Adriana” and “This is the image of the pool at night”.
