A suspected bandit was shot during an exchange of gunfire in Campbelville and another man believed to be his accomplice was arrested shortly after they barged in a yard and robbed several persons, Assistant Police Commissioner, Clifton Hicken said.

The injured man was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for emergency surgery.

Hicken, who is the Commander for ‘A’ Division, told Demerara Waves Online News that the men were eventually cornered in the Campbellville Secondary School compound.

He said one of the suspects discharged gunshots at police and the lawmen returned fire injuring one of them near the Campbellville Nursery School which is in the same compound.

Police later recovered the firearm at the scene and several cellular phones and other items were in possession of one of the suspects.

Investigators were told that the duo allegedly invaded a yard at Seaforth Street, Campbelville where there was a family get-together. There, they asked for someone named Kevin and then held up the persons at gunpoint. They grabbed a bag from a female overseas-based Guyanese containing several hundred thousand Guyana dollars, a gold chain valued GYD$200,000 from an overseas-based Guyanese man, and several cellular phones.

After the men escaped, the victims saw a police patrol and informed them of the incident. Lawmen later received information that the bandits hid in the St. Theresa Roman Catholic church yard which is aback the school compound.
