House torched after wanted man shot dead

Last Updated on Wednesday, 11 November 2015, 18:59 by GxMedia

Police were Wednesday afternoon combing the Bagotstown East Bank Demerara area in search of a man suspected to be involved in the shooting of a wanted man and a midday arson.

The suspect who has not been identified is wanted in connection with the shooting of Jermaine Simon and arson of a home in Bagostown.

Homeowner, Odessa Phillips told reporters at the scene that she was at work when she got a call from her neighbour about the fire.

She said that she has lived there for the past fifteen years with her two children and her reputed husband.

Asked what could have caused the fire, the woman said she suspected that it was deliberately set.

Phillips explained that after 24-year-old Simon was shot on Tuesday, she had an argument with the suspect before he fled the scene.

The argument revolved around the shooting of Simon.

Reports indicate that Simon was wanted for the shooting of Providence teen, Ryan Sooklall.

Demerara Waves understands that the suspect returned to the area sometime on Wednesday and proceeded to the home.

Shortly after he left, flames were seen emanating from the building.

Neighbours quickly raised an alert and managed to rescue two children who were alone in the building at that time.

At the scene, firefighters managed to put out the blaze in quick time, which left most of the structure in place.

However the home was still badly damaged by the fire.

Investigations are ongoing.
