Govt names rice millers who owe farmers

Last Updated on Thursday, 3 September 2015, 20:18 by GxMedia

The Guyana government on Thursday called on several rice millers to pay up all monies owed to rice farmers.

Rice millers can be prosecuted if they do not pay up.

In recent months, rice millers and farmers have been bracing themselves for the gradual phasing out of the lucrative Venezuelan rice market.

Following is the full text of the government’s statement:

The Government of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana empathises with the frustrations of the rice farmers and hopes that the rice millers can make arrangements to have outstanding amounts to rice farmers remitted to them at the earliest possible time. Consultations with the Guyana Rice Development Board on the issue of payment to Region 2 rice farmers by rice millers have resulted in the following information being made available.
