Colin Welch and Renford Homer are GPL’s interim CEO and Deputy CEO

Last Updated on Monday, 24 August 2015, 16:18 by GxMedia

The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) on Monday announced that Colin Welch Deputy Chief Executive Officer-Technical has been designated interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO), while Renford Homer Senior Divisional Director – Commercial Services and Information Technology has been designated interim Deputy Chief Executive Officer.

The announcement came Monday August 24 and it was stated that the interim appointments would continue until the new Board of Directors are installed. “Hence, advertisements to fill existing vacancies on GPL’s Executive Management Structure will be executed.”

The interim appointments came days after the former CEO Bharrat Dindyall was fired when the government learnt that not only was he working without a contract, but he was not recommended by the GPL’s Board of Directors in the continuance of CEO.

However another controversy was brewing at the agency when he was dismissed involving the Welch. It is alleged that he “illegally” locked out two managers from their offices out of the lost reduction. One of these managers were said to have been investigating bills Welch has submitted from an Essequibo trip.

It is alleged that a week later, Welch turned up and locked the managers out. It also alleged that the fired CEO intervened into the matter saying to Welch that he had could lock out the managers.

Dindyal was fired about a week later. It was noted however that in the Boards review of Dindyal last year that showed he scored 21 percent out of a 50 percent evaluation. They said he regularly by-passed the Board and did a poor job at managing the company’s affairs.
