Two prisoners escaped from the New Amsterdam Prison Wednesday night after breaking out of their wooden cell, according to a senior officer of the Guyana Prison Service

The incident occurred at about 9:30 PM. The escapees have been identified as Ravindra Samaroo and Leslie Prince. High-level police sources said one hails from Berbice and the other is from Georgetown.

“Apparently, they broke out from the back of the cell where they were in and then jumped the fence,” the officer told Demerara Waves Online News.

Up to late Wednesday night, police and prison service personnel were searching for the area of the prisoners who were on remand pending trial for robbery under arms.

According to the officer, everything else is calm at the New Amsterdam Prison located on Penitentiary Walk.
