Updated: Chlorine leak contained at GWI’s Better Hope facility

Guyana Water Inc, GWI wishes to inform that the chlorine gas leak which occurred earlier this morning at GWI’s Water Treatment Facility at Better Hope, East Coast Demerara has been contained.

A Hazmat Team located the leaking cylinder and took necessary action to contain the leak including burying the cylinder. 

Nearby residents will be advised by GWI teams to return to their homes as the situation has returned to normal and there is no danger.        

GWI has launched an immediate investigation into the cause of the leak. This will be headed by Occupational Health and Safety Officer, GWI, Christopher Cathro.

GWI expresses gratitude to members of the Guyana Fire Service and Hazmat Teams for their assistance. The company apologizes to all residents of Better Hope and nearby environs and wishes to assure that all action will be taken to avoid a recurrence. More updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
