BREAKING: Prominent Berbice businessman dies in fire; furniture factory destroyed

Fire Monday morning destroyed a furniture factory and prominent Berbice businessman was burnt to death, eyewitnesses said.

Dead is Ayube Hamid, the proprietor of Home Line (Ayube) Furniture Factory.

His wife managed to escape the inferno, but he re-entered the blazing building and never returned.

At least 20 persons employed at the factory are now jobless, at least for the time being.

A nearby house occupied by John Bahadur, wife and two sons was also destroyed by fire.  None of them was injured.
