A joint security team is probing the discovery of a yacht on the Essequibo Island of Wakenaam earlier this week, according to a senior law enforcement source.

Residents said the catamaran washed up at Moor Farm, northern Wakenaam about four days ago. There was no one aboard.

Sources said the vessel has no name or other visible identifying marks. However, an alert has been dispatched to ascertain whether there was any report of piracy.

The source said the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU), Maritime Administration (MARAD) and police were aware of the vessel.

The catamaran was searched and so far there has been no trace of any illegal item or substance aboard.

Investigators were Monday expected to move the vessel to the Wakenaam Police Station for safe keeping and further examination.
