Former Commonwealth Secretary General, Sir Shridath Ramphal has fallen ill and has been admitted to the St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital, according to well-placed sources.Ramphal,86, arrived in Guyana on Monday. The nature of his illness was not immediately known but it necessitated his admission to that health care institution.
His hospitalization comes at a time when Guyana is a preparing to take the Guyana-Venezuela border controversy to a legal dispute settlement mechanism.
The former Guyanese Foreign Minister under then President Forbes Burnham has been working very closely with the current administration in addressing border issues with Suriname and Venezuela that date back to the colonial times.
Sir Shridath headed Guyana’s legal team that successfully settled the maritime boundary between Guyana and Suriname in 2007.
He is a former Chancellor of several universities including the University of Guyana.
