UPDATED: Dead and injured in Corentyne hit-and-run rampage identified

Last Updated on Thursday, 12 June 2014, 0:24 by GxMedia

The car that was involved in the accident on the Corentyne Public Road

A drunken driver killed three persons, including a three year old child, and injured two others  Wednesday night on the public road of three Corentyne villages.

A police source identified the driver of motor car, PPP 5842, as 18 year old Nakash Persaud of Number 51 Village, Corentyne. Investigators said the driver was believed to have been under the influence of alcohol when he went on a hit-and-run rampage.

Persaud first struck down Elroy Park,26, at Kilmanack Village. He was rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital, suffering from severe head injuries.

Persaud then fled the scene and four and half miles further east at Phillipi Village, he hit two sisters and their niece who succumbed to their injuries. They are Juanita Bagot,16, Tabita “Latoya” Bagot and three-year old Shamin Cort.  Juanita, a student of Lower Corentyne Secondary School, wrote CXC examinations on Tuesday. They were returning from a shop and were a couple of yards from home when tragedy struck.

Further east at Number 35 Village, the driver hit Matthew Mc Bean. He was admitted to the New Amsterdam Hospital.

Persaud was cornered by residents at Number 35 Village and he was subsequently taken into police custody.
