Fire fighters early Tuesday morning recovered the body of a man from a burning house at Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara.
He has been identified only as Mr. Sewsankar and he was said to be in his late 70s. He sustained burns about his body.
The man was rushed to the hospital in a police pick-up shortly after he was taken out of the building by firemen Caesar and Campbell. Sewsankar was pronounced dead on arrival.
Neighbours reported hearing a loud explosion shortly before the house was engulfed in flames.
The heavily grilled building is located on Third Street, Turkeyen opposite the Guyana International Conference Centre.
Three fire tenders responded to the emergency call and on arrival they saw smoke and fire.
