Updated: New Amsterdam prisoners chopped by fellow inmate

Last Updated on Saturday, 26 December 2015, 20:59 by GxMedia

One of the prisoners being wheeled into the Georgetown Public Hospital

Chaos broke out in the New Amsterdam prison Friday afternoon when a prisoner entered a number of cells and chopped at least four prisoners , leaving them in a critical condition.

The perpetrator is known only as ‘Shoulders’.

A police source told Demerara Waves that around 5:30 PM the murder suspect, choked a prison warden into an unconscious state before taking away the keys.

Armed with a cutlass, he allegedly opened the selected prison cells and hacked the four men. Those injured are Abdussalam ‘Sato’Azimullah, , Kwame Bhagwandin, Davendra ‘Bara’’Harricharran and Clarence “Dark Face” Williams.

Azimullah and another one, whose name was not immediately known, were in a critical condition. The four were all transferred from the New Amsterdam Hospital to the Georgetown Public Hospital.  At the city medical institution, several hostile prison wardens attempted to prevent media personnel from taking photographs by standing in their way.

Demerara Waves was further informed that the four men, who were attacked, are part of a gang which would normally bully other prisoners from the correctional facility.

Police and members of the prison service rushed to New Amsterdam to assist their counterparts there to help quell the unrest. At the back of a Guyana Prison Service pickup, which accompanied one of the ambulances, was seen several riot helmets and other paraphernalia- an indication that the prison officers might have entered the New Amsterdam prison fully clad for battle.

The suspect in the custody of the police and the weapon, said to be a cutlass, has been retrieved.
