Arson is suspected to be the cause of the early Saturday morning fire that seriously damaged a building housing the Family Planning Association of Guyana on Croal Street, Georgetown.
This is the second fire in less than one month to have targeted the health sector, the first being the Medex Building at Liliendaal. The Family Planning Association off Guyana is a non-governmental organisation.
Guyana Fire Service Chief Fire Officer, Marlon Gentle said “multiple fires” were set in the building on Croal Street. He said either kerosene or gasolene was used to set the fire.
Three fire tenders responded to the fire call and prevented the building from being gutted. The evidence showing that the blaze was the work of arsonists was also saved.
Sources said Family Planning Association workers believed that sustained efforts are being made to get them out of the building. Workers have been robbed and computers have been stolen in the past.
