One killed, six injured in Matthew’s Ridge accident

Last Updated on Saturday, 26 December 2015, 21:01 by GxMedia

A 17-year old boy was Wednesday afternoon killed and his brother seriously injured after a truck returning from a gold mine toppled off a hill in the North West District.

Dead is 17-year old Leandre Perez of Citrus Grove, Port Kaituma. His brother, 28-year old Anil Singh, was air-dashed to a city hospital. Singh, who was conscious, sustained severe chest injuries and was experiencing difficulty in breathing.

Details about the accident are sketchy because close relatives, who are in Port Kaituma, have not been fully briefed about how the accident occurred on Mineab Hill, Matthews Ridge.

“We don’t know who they were working with and we don’t know the area,” said the boys’ uncle, Neville La Rose. He is also chairman of the Citrus Grove Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC). He said they were returning home after leaving three months for the ‘back dam’ (gold bearing area).

Preliminary information received suggests that a truck overturned while on the hill.

Sources said five other persons were treated and sent away. They are Anthony Taylor,31, of Canje, Berbice; Simeon Griffith,23, of Essequibo Coast; Orette Alexander,32, of 18 Prospect, East Bank Demerara; Levaughn Hose,25, of Coverden, East Bank Demerara and 39-year old Eric Fredericks of Waini River.

The driver, only known as “Tall Man” was detained by police for questioning.
