The truck was heading in an easterly direction on the northern side of the road.
He has been identified as Eldon Williams who was in his early 20s.
Police Commander for ‘A’ Division Clifton Hicken told Demerara Waves Online News that the policeman, who as based at Brickdam Police Station, was placing barriers in the vicinity of the Hits and Jams Resort when the “freak” accident occurred.
Hicken said despite best efforts by other policemen to urge the truck driver to stop, the vehicle “clipped” Williams’ jersey and crushed the lawman to death. The accident occured at about 9:45 AM.
It was not immediately clear whether the policeman was on official duty because he was not attired in uniform at the time of the accident.
The Guyana Police Force later said in a statement that the driver of the Canter truck was arrested in connection with the accident.
