Mentally ill man shot dead while attacking police with cutlass

Last Updated on Sunday, 5 July 2015, 3:59 by GxMedia

A cutlass-wielding mentally ill man was shot dead  Saturday after he allegedly attacked police who responded to a report that he was threatening a woman at Strathavon, East Coast Demerara.

Dead is 30-year old Junior Gulliver of the same village.

“During their investigations the police ranks were attacked by Junior Gulliver, who was armed with the cutlass, causing the police to resort to the use of force and he was shot to his body. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mahaicony Hospital,” police said in a statement. Police said the man was “reported to be mentally unstable.”

Investigators learnt that at about 3 O’clock Saturday afternoon, police from the Cane Grove Police Station responded to reports about Gulliver’s alleged threatening behaviour.

Police said the windscreen and other parts of a motor vehicle that was used by the lawmen to get to the scene was also damaged by Gulliver during the incident.

The Police Office of Professional Responsibility is conducting investigations into the matter.
