Foreign Ministry dispatches accountant, foreign service officer to examine ‘one-man’ High Commission in India

The Foreign Affairs Ministry has dispatched a team to Guyana’s High Commission India to peruse the accounts and general administration as High Commissioner Ronald Gajraj prepares to demit office as a result of a change in government, a senior Foreign Ministry official said.

The official said an Accountant from the Foreign Ministry in Guyana and United States-based Guyanese Foreign Service Officer, Forbes July left for India late last week on a fact-finding mission.

Sources said government decided to dispatch the team to India especially since Gajraj has been the lone person at the High Commission for several years.”The High Commissioner was there alone and we would like to know what took place or what to do,” the Foreign Ministry official told Demerara Waves Online News. “He (Gajraj) was not there with an accountant,” added the official.

The official shied away from calling the visit to Delhi an investigation.

Gajraj is due to return to Guyana in either August or September.

The Ministry of the Presidency has not yet announced a replacement for Gajraj, a former Home Affairs Minister and Attorney-at-Law by profession.

He was also a senior officer of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).
