President Irfaan Ali late Sunday night congratulated Brazil’s President, Luis Inacio ‘Lula’ Da Silva on his re-election for a fourth historic term, pledging to continue working together in several areas including the creation of wealyj in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The BBC reported that da Silva, the veteran left-wing president, has been re-elected after a bitterly fought campaign, beating his right-wing rival Flávio Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro had promised to align Brazil more closely with Washington while Lula had warned the US not to interfere in the election and insisted that Brazil would “never fit into anyone’s backyard”.
The Guyanese leader said the Brazilian leader’s historic reelection would allow him and his party to build on the progress achieved over the previous term and to “pursue a future of greater opportunity for all Brazilians.”
Meanwhile, Secretary General of the Organisation of American States (OAS) Albert Ramdin on Sunday night said the Western Hemispheric organisation commended “the Brazilian people for their increased voter participation in the second round of the elections, a testament to their commitment to civic duty, peaceful conduct, and democratic spirit and values. Following President Lula’s reelection, the OAS will continue working with the Government of Brazil on the forward looking and united hemispheric agenda for peace and prosperity. The OAS EOM (Election Observation Mission) in Brazil’s preliminary report on the runoff will outline opportunities to improve the country’s electoral processes.”
