Decomposing whale washes up on Essequibo Coast; residents complain about stench

Last Updated on Monday, 1 June 2015, 0:03 by GxMedia

A decomposing whale has washed ashore at Maria’s Lodge, Essequibo Coast, residents reported Sunday.

Concerns have since been raised about the health of nearby residents who are already complaining about the stench.

Hindus, who frequent the seashore for religious reasons, were Sunday unable to do so because of the unpleasant smell.

“It is stinking. It has a huge chop, guts are out. It smells terrible,” a resident told Demerara Waves Online News.

Residents said the 40-foot long whale washed up Sunday afternoon on the seashore. It was already dead.

Sources said regional environmental personnel were due to visit the scene to make an assessment and come up with recommendations on how to dispose of the mammal.

Earlier this year, a dead whale washed up on the Kitty foreshore, Georgetown and was buried there because it was too heavy to be hoisted and taken elsewhere.

Though interred, nearby residents had later complained that the stench was affecting them.
