APNU+AFC’s David Granger, thousands others vote

Leader of the main opposition coalition A Partnership for National Unity+ Alliance For Change (APNU+ AFC) David Granger and his wife, Sandra, were among thousands of persons countrywide who voted when polls opened at 6AM Monday morning for what is widely expected to be a keenly contested general election.

They cast their ballot  at Enterprise Primary School, Dโ€™urban Backlands, Lodge.

Incumbent President, Donald Ramotar is expected to vote later Monday morning at a school nearby his official residence at State House.

Major campaign issues for the opposoition are corruption; poor health, education, sanitation and other social services; lunemployment, low salaries and high taxes. For its part, the incumbent People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) wants Guyanese to re-elect them to create thousands of jobs, the construction of a huge hydropower station, the upgrading of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, the establishment of strong anti-corruption mechanisms and the improvement of social services.
Local, regional and international observers are overseeing the polls by visiting samples of the 2,229 polling stations countrywide.

Hundreds of soldiers have been deployed countrywide to assist police in internal security should the need arise.

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) says the official declaration of results is not expected before Wednesday morning.
