A sergeant of the Cove and John Police Station has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of four 9mm pistols, three .32 pistols and 68 rounds of ammunition from that East Cast Demerara location, police said Sunday.
Police said the weapons and ammunition were discovered missing on Wednesday April 15, from the arms room at the police station.

“The Guyana Police Force is pursuing all necessary investigative and operational measures to account for and recover the missing firearms and ammunition,” the law enforcement agency said in a statement.
“Preliminary enquiries revealed that the matter came to light during checks and a subsequent audit of exhibits and firearms lodged at the station,” police said.
Police said the matter was reported through the established chain of command and the Office of Professional Responsibility has since commenced an investigation.
As part of the probe, the police force said several statements have been obtained and relevant records extracted, as part of the ongoing probe.
The police force sought to assure the public that the matter was being treated with the seriousness it warrants and that all appropriate action would be taken in accordance with the law and established procedures.
