Ms. Oneidge Walrond

President Irfaan Ali says the home affairs minister, Oneidge Walrond, has assured him that she did not intervene in an incident in which a vehicle he was allegedly driving ended up in the Vlissengen Road/Irvine Street trench.

“The minister has grown children. One of her kids was involved in an accident. The minister has not intervened in any way,” he told Demerara Waves Online News.

Dr Ali’s assurance came even as Ms Walrond, the Guyana Police Force Public Relations Department and the Traffic Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mahendra Singh remained silent on enquiries.

Calls and messages to the minister remained unanswered.

After further explaining to the President that the allegation was that the minister’s son was allegedly driving a Guyana government vehicle which was involved in the incident, he reiterated that “The minister has spoken to me, informing me about this accident and has assured me that she has not gotten involved with the police or nothing on this matter.”

President Ali said, in light of all sorts of accusations, the police are “the best persons” to speak on the incident and he promised to have the Traffic Chief “give clarity” on the incident, but so far none has been forthcoming.

Opposition Leader, Azruddin Mohamed had raised concerns about the alleged involvement of the home affairs minister’s son in the recent incident.

Usually, Guyana government institutions are quick to debunk Mr Mohamed’s claims whenever they are not factual.

In other instances, the police force promptly responds or provides an update on investigations.
