More than 570,000 paper ballots for next month’s general and regional elections arrived at the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) early Sunday morning under tight police security.Sources said the cargo plane from Canada arrived about 10 O’clock Saturday night. By 1:48 Sunday morning numerous enclosed trucks containing the ballots began rolling into the elections management authority’s compound.
Moments before, heavily armed police took up strategic positions on Cowan Street and Fort Street, Kingston, Georgetown.
GECOM Commissioners Charles Corbin and Sase Gunraj supervised the printing of the ballots for the May 11, 2015 general and regional elections.
Commission Chairman, Steve Surujbally said the tally sheets and statements of poll have been already printed.
The two main contenders are the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC), which is seeking sixth straight term, and the main opposition coalition of A Partnership for National Unity+ Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC).
