Convent of the Good Shepherd renamed Waveney Benjamin Building

Last Updated on Friday, 27 March 2026, 22:15 by Writer

Mrs Waveney Benjamin

The re-naming of the Convent of the Good Shepherd, situated on the corner of Lance Gibbs and Oronoque streets, Queenstown, to The Waveney Benjamin Building, was on March 25, 2026 in acknowledgement of the significant service to the Mothers’ Union (MU).

The building also houses the Mothers’ Union Day Care Centre.

The renaming ceremony was done as part of Evening Prayer (church service) which was presided over by The Right Reverend Charles Davidson, Bishop of Guyana, and was held on the premises.

It was attended by clergy, leaders and members of the Diocesan Mothers’ Union, children and other family and friends of Waveney Benjamin.

As shared through a brief presentation by Reverend Mother Wendell Roberts (herself a past president of MU), Waveney Agatha Benjamin (deceased 2014) served as Diocesan Worker of the Anglican Mothers’ Union for 19 years and was instrumental in the setting up of branches of this organization in many communities around Guyana, including some hinterland regions.

She was also pivotal in the establishment of the first Day Care Centre run by the Mothers’ Union that has been in existence for more than three decades.

The wife of the late Major, the Reverend Canon Neil Benjamin, Waveney Benjamin dedicated much time and energy to her responsibilities for the Mothers’ Union and to other organisations in the Anglican church and beyond.

Anglican Bishop of Guyana, Reverend Charles Davidson.

As pointed out by Bishop Davidson, there is also significance in the date of March 25 in that it was on that date that Mrs. Benjamin became a member of the MU.

It is also Lady Day – an important date on the MU calendar.

Coincidentally, March 25 is also the anniversary on which Bishop Davidson was ordained.

At a later date, subsequent to the completion of on-going repairs to the building, the necessary plaque and other signage would be prominently erected.
