Two members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) are under close arrest following the death of a 30-year-old man while in custody at the Cove and John Police Station, East Coast Demerara.
The A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), meanwhile, said former health minister Dr Karen Cummings, “as the independent medical professional,” would Friday witness the post-mortem on the body of Jordan Payne of South Haslington.
In a statement, the police force said the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) had launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the matter.
APNU also said two attorneys-at-law, Dexter Todd and Ronald Daniels, along with party representatives Robin Sion and Delon Carter met with the acting commander of Senior Superintendent Dennis Stephens “as part of ongoing efforts to demand clarity and accountability.”
“This is a moment that calls for transparency, integrity, and unwavering commitment to justice. We will continue to stand with the Payne family and ensure that no stone is left unturned,” that parliamentary party said.
Police said that as part of the ongoing probe, several police and civilian witnesses had been interviewed and statements obtained.
The GPF sought to assure the public that the matter was being treated with the seriousness it warrants, and that all necessary procedures were being followed as the investigation continues.
