Printing of ballots in Canada for next month’s general and regional elections has begun and is being overseen by two Guyana Elections Commissioners, according to Commission Chairman, Dr. Steve Surujbally.
“We have two commissioners in Canada right now overseeing the printing of ballots,” he told Demerara Waves Online News. Printing, he said, is expected to be completed by next week after which the ballots would be flown to Guyana directly.
Elections are scheduled for May 11, 2015,
Well-placed source told Demerara Waves on Thursday that Commissioners Sase Gunraj and Charles Corbin left for Canada earlier this week. Gunraj was nominated by the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) to be appointed a commissioner while Corbin was nominated by A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).
There are little more than 570,000 persons on the final voters list which Surujbally announced would be published in the Official Gazette on Saturday.
The GECOM Chairman said Tally Sheets and Statements of Poll have been already printed.
Cabinet earlier this week announced that a contract has been awarded to the tune of GUY$66.8 million for the procurement of sensitive materials for elections (ballot paper, ink, stamps, tally sheets etc).
Contesting the national elections are the PPPC, A Partnership for National Unity+ Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) , National Independent Party, Independent Party, The United Force and the United Republic Party. The Organisation of Victory for the People (OVP) and The Healing the Nation Theocracy Partyare contesting in Region Four only.
