Tremor in Guyana linked to earthquake in Venezuela

Parts of Guyana were rattled by a slight tremor Wednesday night, several residents across the country confirmed.

An earthquake tracking website stated that about 10:24 PM (Guyana Time) there was a 5.2 magnitude earthquake 89 kilometers from Carupano, Sucre in neighbouring Venezuela.

The tremor was felt in Guyana around the same time. No one reported any damage in Guyana.

Confirmation that the earth shook in Georgetown, Bartica, West Coast Berbice, East Bank Demerara, West Coast Demerara and the Essequibo Coast came from persons in those areas. “Things were shaking in my house,” said a resident of Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara.

Someone in Alberrtown, Georgetown felt it and reported that “it lasted for just about 1+ minute.” Across in Lamaha Gardens, Georgetown, a Citizen Reporter described the tremor as “noticeable, but not strong (and) not frightening.

In Bartica, a female told Demerara Waves Online News that “I was a bit scared because my house is so high and I was wondering what was happening.” However, someone else said “Yes I did but I ignored it and taught was just my imagination.

People at Mashabo near the Ituribisi lake on the Essequibo Coast also experienced the tremor.
