Man, who threatened woman, jailed for illegal gun, ammo possession

A man, who whipped out a pistol during an argument with a female friend and threatened to shoot her, was Tuesday jailed for two years after he pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Twenty-three year old Joel Johnson was also fined GYD$100,000 by Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

He pleaded guilty to the charges of being in illegal possession of one .38 pistol and seven rounds of .38 ammunition without being the holder of a firearm license. He was sentenced to two years imprisonment on each charge and the jail terms would run concurrently.

The court heard that he committed the offences on April 12 at Arakaka, North West District.

According to the prosecution’s facts presented to the court, Johnson left the shop where he was employed and visited a nearby shop where he met his female friend.

During an argument with the woman, Johnson whipped out the pistol and threatened to shoot her.

Fearful for her life, the woman reported the incident to police who searched the shop where Johnson worked and found the gun and ammunition.

Johnson told the court that the gun was given to him by his employer, Rhonda Samuels, for security purposes.
