“Lapse” at Parika Police Station during assault

Last Updated on Monday, 9 February 2026, 20:28 by Writer

This Facebook video shows two men fighting in the Parika Police Station compound

Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond said there was a “lapse” at the Parika Police Station, East Bank Essequibo early on Sunday morning when an assault victim was attacked in the police station compound.

“It’s clear that there was a lapse there in terms of police presence at the police station,” she told reporters.

Ms Walrond said Deputy Police Commissioner (Operations) Errol Watts assured her that he would “deal with that very seriously.”

Based on a social media post, a man was seen running inside the station and seconds later he and another man exited the building. He then struck the person, who initially sought refuge in the station, several times.

She said the assailant has since been arrested, charged and remained in custody in connection with the 3 a.m. incident. “The assailant has been charged with wounding,” she said.

The Guyana Police Force said a male visited the Parika Police Station to make a report of an alleged assault. While he was within the station compound, another male entered the premises, forcibly confronted him and began assaulting him, according t0 that law enforcement agency.

Police said the other individual who came to make the report and was assaulted left the scene and efforts are ongoing to locate him.

“Ranks who were present at the time immediately intervened, arrested the male who ran into the station and brought the situation under control,” police said.

That man, a 33-year-old vendor of Farm, East Bank Essequibo was escorted to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where he was examined and deemed to be in stable condition. He was subsequently escorted back to the Parika Police Station and placed into custody pending investigation, police said

Police said the entire incident was captured on CCTV attached to the station and forms part of the ongoing investigation.

“The Guyana Police Force strongly condemns any act of violence, particularly within the confines of a police station. Police premises are places of safety and lawful redress and any attempt to engage in disorderly conduct at such facilities will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.”
