US to “run” Venezuela until safe transition – Trump

Mr Donald Trump

Mr Donald Trump

United States (US) President Donald Trump on Saturday said the US will run Venezuela until a “safe transition”, hours after President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were captured and taken out of the country amid a pre-dawn missile bombardment of several military installations in and around the capital, Caracas.

Al Jazeera reported that Mr Trump told a press conference that the US would be “very strongly involved” in Venezuela’s oil industry.

“We’re going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition. “We don’t want to be involved with somebody else getting in and we have the same situation we had for the last long period of years,” the American president said.

The American leader said oil companies would help to fund the re-development of Venezuela after which they would be reimbursed. He said the wealth would be adequately distributed to Venezuelans.

Mr Trump said talks had already been held with Delcy Rodriguez, who was sworn in as Venezuela’s President earlier on Saturday, and she promised to do what is necessary.

The Maduros are being taken to New York where they have been indicted.

Vladimir Padrino López, Venezuela’s defence minister, says the country “will prevail … not negotiate … not give up”. Earlier, Venezuela’s government accused the US of attacking civilian and military installations in multiple states, as ‍it rejected “military aggression” ‍by Washington.

The attacks came after months of tension with the US, which has accused Maduro of being involved in drug trafficking.

The US has carried out more than 20 air strikes in the sea near Venezuela since September.

Maduro has denied the accusations laid before him.

On Thursday, Maduro indicated he was open to negotiating a deal with the US to combat drug trafficking.
