Amid accusations by Leader of We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), Azruddin Mohamed that President Irfaan Ali appeared set to break his promise of cash grants before Christmas, the Guyanese leader on Thursday lashed back.

“Let me say this to our detractors. You don’t need to remind us about our commitment whether it’s cash grant, incentives, subsidies. You don’t need to remind us. We know what our commitments are and we are going to deliver on everyone of them faster, better, greater,” President Ali said in his feature address to declare open GuyExpo 2025 at the National Exhibition Centre in Sophia.

Earlier on Thursday, Mr Mohamed said on Facebook that: “WIN demands that the PPP honour their promises.” He said on August 26, President Ali assured Guyanese that “we will have a beautiful Christmas,” indicating that a cash grant would be provided for the holiday season.

On October 2nd, Vice-President Bharrat Jagdeo stated that “whatever the President said on the campaign trail will be done.” But the WIN Leader said” However, no announcement has been made to date.”

Stopping short of naming Mr Mohamed, the President said in a scolding tone: “Find your place, stay in your lane. Don’t get besides yourself, Understand what level you’re boxing at. Build your reputation before you come to the heavyweight.”

The President said Guyana’s economy was not a “toy” or way of “beating” or “”stealing from the system.”

Mr Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed, are currently fighting a United States extradition request for them to face a grand jury 11-count indictment charge of wire fraud, mail fraud and money laundering connected to their gold trading business. The Mohameds were in June 2024 sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office for Foreign Assets Control for allegedly evading more than US$50 million in taxes payable to the Guyana government on the export of more than 10,000 kilogrammes of gold.

Dr Ali cautioned Guyanese against being influenced by certain types of social media-driven content. “If we continue to let simplistic messages infiltrate our brains, we can destroy all that we are building,” he said.

The WIN party won 16 of the 65 seats in the National Assembly, beating the People’s National Congress Reform-led A Partnership for National Unity which won 12 seats, to become Guyana’s largest parliamentary opposition party.
