The death of a 15-year-old schoolboy at Success, East Coast Demerara on Thursday has pushed Guyana’s death toll to 104 for the year, police said.
This is in contrast to 100 deaths from 88 fatal accidents for the same period last year.
Police said Navindra Mahes was struck down by a car, driven by a female police lance corporal, at about 7:30 on Thursday morning while attempting to cross the Success Public road. “The student then attempted to cross the road in a northern direction, using the Pedestrian Crossing, and in doing so, the left-side front portion of the car collided with the schoolboy,” the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said in a statement.
The 35-year-old woman, who was driving motorcar #PAB 214, has since been placed under close arrest, the GPF said.
The boy, who was a student of Annandale Secondary School, resided at Lot 44 Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara.
Mahes was picked up by public-spirited citizens and escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit. He sustained head injuries and a fractured right leg.
Police said he succumbed to his injuries at 9:56 a.m. while receiving medical treatment.
