The assistant accountant of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), who was charged with the theft of GY$5 million from that election management authority, was granted GY$500,000 bail by the High Court.
Dkimbie Gittens, 30, had been refused bail and remanded to prison ever since his first appearance before a city magistrate on September 25.
However, Attorney-at-Law Brenden Glasford on on October 6 secured the GY$500,000 bail with conditions on successful application to High Court Judge, Jacqueline Josiah-Graham.
Mr Gittens returns to the Magistrates’ Court on November 5.
Mr Glasford approached the High Court for judicial review, saying that the magistrate’s reasons for refusing bail were not in conformity with the provisions of the Bail Act 2022.
Mr Gittens, who resides at Onderneeming, Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, was charged with larceny by clerk or servant in violation of the Criminal Law Offences Act.
His last appearance in the magistrates’ court was on October 15.
Police accused him of stealing a little over GY$5 million from the GECOM Secretariat at Barrack and Fort streets, Kingston, Georgetown between September 15 and 16, 2025. He was arrested on September 22.
Sources said the money was withdrawn to pay GECOM’s polling day workers. However, it was soon realised that money was missing and police were called in.
A total of 13 persons had been detained by police and subsequently released on station bail.
