A policeman has been placed under close arrest after the car he was driving struck down and killed a pedestrian on the Mon Repos Public Road, East Coast Demerara on early Tuesday morning, the Guyana Police Force said.
“A breathalyser test was conducted on the driver, and there was no trace of alcohol on his breath. The driver is presently under close arrest,” police said in the statement.
The dead man has been only identified as “Soath”.
Investigators said that at about 2 a.m. the car bearing licence number PAC 9262, owned and driven by a lance corporal, who is stationed at the Ogle Police Outpost, hit the pedestrian as he was crossing the road.
“Enquiries disclosed that the car was proceeding West along the northern drive lane of the southern carriageway of Mon Repos public road when the pedestrian ran from south to north into the path of the car.
As a result, the left front of the vehicle collided with the pedestrian, who fell on the road surface and received injuries to his body. He was picked up in an unconscious condition, placed in an ambulance, and conveyed to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where the pedestrian succumbed from (sic) his injuries,” police said.
Soath’s body is at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s mortuary awaiting identification and a post-mortem examination.
