The new four-lane, high-span, cable-stayed Demerara River Bridge will be officially commissioned on Sunday afternoon, three years after it was launched, the government announced on Tuesday.
President Irfaan Ali is due to deliver the keynote address at the event scheduled for October 5 at 5:30 p.m.
“The long-awaited superstructure is built to support the uninterrupted flow of vehicular and (marine) vessel traffic, which will significantly reduce travel time, improve connectivity between Regions Three and Four and strengthen the movement of goods and services across the country,” a government statement said.
This landmark project, launched in 2022, forms part of the Government’s wider vision of national transformation, the statement said.
The completion of the US$260 million bridge by China Railway Construction (International) Limited had missed several deadlines.
Despite initial resistance by the government, a load test was conducted in keeping with American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) standards.
