An autopsy appeared to have cleared police and inmates of any wrongdoing in connection with the death of a man while he was in custody.

Police said a post mortem examination conducted Friday on the body of Zaharudeen Razan of Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara showed that he died of “epileptic seizure.”

“The cause of death was given as blunt trauma to the head, brain haemorrhage, and hyperextension which, as explained by the Pathologist, were consistent with an epileptic seizure. There were also bite marks on his tongue,” said the Guyana Police Force in a statement.

After the autopsy, police said the cause of death was explained by Dr. Nehaul Singh to the Lawyer retained by relatives.

Razan died on February 25, 2015, while in police custody.  He had been arrested and taken into custody at about 9:10 Tuesday night, following a report of damage to property that was made against him.

He was held at the Parika Police Station lock-up where he was seen lying on the floor. He was taken to the Leonora Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Prior to being taken to the Leonora Hospital, police said that up to 8:45 that morning Rozan had been seen “alive and lying” on the floor.
