Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo said Wednesday there is video evidence showing Nazar “Shell” Mohamed and his son, Azruddin Mohamed, entering the Venezuelan Embassy.
“Watch what will happen over the next few days over the next few days because I hope he will deny that, too, because there is video evidence of the Mohameds going into the Venezuelan Embassy,” Mr Jagdeo told a People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) campaign meeting in Alexander Village.
He said the senior Mohamed and his son, Azruddin, who is leader of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, might be planning to seek refuge in Venezuela.
The Mohameds, who were sanctioned last year June for alleged tax evasion on gold exports, Mr Jagdeo suggested, could be preparing to flee to Venezuela as a safe haven against US extradition. “Why are the Mohameds applying now for a visa to Venezuela, of all countries in the world, because Venezuela does not have an extradition treaty with the United States of America and the links are being formulated,” he said.
The PPP General Secretary said in addition to alleged gold smuggling and tax evasion there were “many other things” that would continue to emerge in the future.
The WIN party leader on Tuesday bluntly denied ever going to the Venezuelan embassy and challenged the government to provide evidence.
Foreign Affairs Minister Hugh Todd was quoted by the government’s Department of Public Information as saying that he summoned the Venezuelan Ambassador to Guyana to enquire why the Mohameds were frequently going to the embassy.
Mr Todd said the Venezuelan Ambassador informed him that they were applying for Venezuelan visas.
Earlier this year, a Guyana government-hired American lobbying firm persuaded two Republican members of Congress to tweet that Mr Mohamed is a puppet candidate of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
The WIN Leader said he was committed to preserving Guyana’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, unlike the ruling PPPC that appears to be in “cahoots” with Mr Maduro.
