Georgetown Nursing School students protest relocation

Last Updated on Friday, 20 February 2015, 19:43 by GxMedia

A number of students of the Georgetown School of Nursing on Friday protested their relocation to the institution’s Annexe in another part of the city, but a senior official said the move has become necessary to accommodate University of Guyana medical students.

When the students were informed Friday, they vented their anger by vacating the building and standing outside the school’s headquarters on East Street.

The official assured that it is not the entire school that would be removing from East Street, Georgetown but only 90 students studying to become Nursing Assistants and Midwives.

According to the source, the classrooms would be occupied by UG medical students to assist in fulfilling the requirements for accreditation.

The source confirmed that it was the contractors, who are rehabilitating and re-modeling the four classrooms, informed the students on Friday that they would have to vacate the rooms and move to the institution’s annexe on Fort Street, Kingston.

The students believed that they should have been consulted properly and informed by the Principal of the School of Nursing rather than the contractors. Other sources said the School’s administration has not been informed about the relocation of the students.

A student is objecting to the relocation on grounds that the Kingston annexe is too small to accommodate more students.
